🧠 Quote Of The Week

“Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.”

— Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

🏹 Robinhood Breaks Down a Barrier

Robinhood has begun rolling out Bitcoin trading to eligible UK customers this week, via its FCA-registered Bitstamp UK subsidiary.

More than 50 assets, Bitcoin included, are now live inside the same app as customers' stocks and shares ISAs. The launch follows Robinhood's FCA registration on 31 July, ahead of the UK's new cryptoasset regime.

Every high-street app that adds Bitcoin makes it a little less scary, and a little more accessible.

🛡️ Another Setback for Self-Custody

One of Trezor's shipping providers, ShipMonk, disclosed a data breach this week exposing customer order data.

Names, phone numbers, email addresses and shipping addresses were accessed for roughly 13,689 customers who ordered between 10 May and 8 August, across the US, UK, Sweden, Colombia, Brazil, Italy and Portugal.

Trezor says its own systems, devices, private keys and wallet backups were not touched. The concern is downstream: affected customers are now a more convincing phishing target.

🏛️ MPs Put Banks on Notice

MPs have written to the CEOs of every major UK bank, demanding answers over Bitcoin and crypto firms being shut out of basic banking.

The Crypto and Digital Assets APPG says it has heard "repeated instances" of firms struggling to open accounts, with several banks restricting crypto-related payments outright. The letter warns this could undermine the UK's own incoming crypto regime before it even starts.

Banks have until 31 August to submit evidence to Parliament's inquiry.

🍴 No Forks Given

Bitcoin's attempt at a forced rule change, BIP-110, collapsed this week, and the fallout cost a BIP editor his role.

The soft fork, an attempt to temporarily block non-financial data such as Ordinals inscriptions from Bitcoin transactions, began mandatory signalling on 8 August, getting just 2.53% of miners on side against the 55% needed to activate.

The minority chain it spawned produced two blocks, then stalled. Two days later, Bitcoin's BIP editors removed lead proponent Luke Dashjr, citing conflict of interest and procedural breaches. Dashjr calls it "an abuse of power" and is taking a sabbatical from mining pool Ocean.

Nobody voted. Nobody was fired by a board. The network simply declined to follow, and the rules stayed exactly as they were.

⚠️ BTCPay: Emergency Update

BTCPay Server has released a series of emergency patches after confirming attackers exploited a critical vulnerability and stole funds.

A bug let attackers remotely steal login files for LND, one of the software options behind Lightning wallets, without ever needing to break in first. That gave them enough access to take over a node and drain its funds.

The latest release, still being tested, closes several more issues found by security researchers. BTCPay Server says to update now rather than wait for the polished version.

🏡 Bitcoin’s UK Postcode

The Bitcoin Collective has launched its new website. It is the home for all things Bitcoin in the UK.

It's built to help you make sense of things at your own pace, without the feeling that you're already behind. The weekly newsletter, the podcast, data, tools and resources all live there now.

Have a look, tell us what you think, and if you know someone just getting curious about Bitcoin, this is the easiest place to point them.
